As we look ahead into the new decade (that sounds big!), Goldsboro Wayne County is an exciting place to be. With so much momentum behind Downtown development, new places to eat and shop, some memorable historical events and some delicious foodie events, the new year is looking bright. Here are just some of the highlights to get excited about in the very near future, and of course, there are many, many more. Here’s to a fantastic 2020!

Wilber’s re-opening

It’s been a tough year without Wilber’s, but Spring 2020 will see the end of those dark days! That is the anticipated time of year that the BBQ joint which put Goldsboro on the map is set to re-open. Widely acclaimed as NC’s favorite BBQ, Wilber’s has famously served Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton – if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us! Restoration plans of the iconic, historic building on Hwy 70 has begun, and the re-opening can’t come soon enough if you ask us!

Downtown Streetscaping continues

Goldsboro’s beautiful Downtown continues to improve every time we visit, and 2020 sees some big changes and improvements to this cherished place we’ve come to love. The work is happening at the southern end of Downtown Goldsboro, where the Cornerstone Commons will be transformed into ‘The Hub’, which will feature seating areas, biking paths, public restrooms and a performance stage. And – importantly – the historic Freedom Tree at the intersection of Center and Spruce Street is protected, and will remain. Development is expected to be complete by May 2020, just in time for summer!

A piece of History

Much anticipated, and presented only once every five years, this is one to remember. The 155th Bentonville Anniversary Reenactment is the largest reenactment event in NC, and essential for any history fans, or simply anyone looking for a spectacular show. Commemorating the Battle of Bentonville of March 19-21 1865, the last major Confederate offensive of the Civil War, the event features two battle reenactments and much more. Cheers to new breweries in town!

Downtown Goldsboro is set to see not one, but two brand new breweries open in 2020. Opening dates are yet to be confirmed, but both are hotly anticipated. The owners of Goldsboro Brew Works are responsible for one of the Breweries, situated in an old gas station, with plans for a tap room, outdoor beer garden and live performances. The second brewery will be run by Anderson Brewing, and is set to feature an on-site bakery, using the hops not used in the beer. Watch this space for opening details, and get thirsty!
