CLIFFS OF THE NEUSE STATE PARK
The 90-feet high cliffs on the Neuse River’s south bank show the magnificently chiseled results of the erosion’s mighty force. The multicolored cliffs were formed when a fault in the earth’s crust shifted millions of years ago. The Neuse River followed this faultline, and a portion of the Neuse took a bend against its bank resulting in the erosion action that eventually carved the Cliffs of the Neuse. The 219 acres of land, now known as Cliffs of the Neuse, were donated by Lionel Weil in 1945 for a nature park. This North Carolina State Park offers birding, hiking trails, paddling, picnicking, and river fishing. Organized group camping (reservations required), seasonal family camping, and a seasonal swimming lake are available for a modest fee. The museum is open daily from March 15th until November 30th and on weekends during the winter months.
